Mug design project
The purpose of this project was to create an insulated mug with a detachable handle using traditional manufacturing techniques, while also explaining all steps of the design process. The setup was:
-

-
Exercise 1: activities, research, experiments, testing, and questions for the client on the mug design
-

-
Exercise 2: activities, research, experiments, testing, and questions for the client on the detachable handle design
-

-
Exercise 3: A brief summary of the design with important information, manufacturing processes, a CAD model of the mug with detachable handle, steps taken in the design and why, steps to prototype and evaluate the mug

The CAD model designed in Fusion 360 is shown below

Press fit top and bottom.

In manufacturing, the inner and outer shells are often connected via press fit on the top, vacuum sealed between, then a cap is press fit at the bottom. The design of the mug reflects this common technique.

Detachable handle

Detachable handle can be released by sliding downwards when the switch is pressed. To reattach, slide upwards into mug
Detachable handle switch

Spring normally keeps switch in place, however the switch can be pressed inwards to allow the handle to slide outwards. Switch has slight chamfer to allow handle to slide back in without having to depress switch
Double wall design

Having two walls with a near vacuum between them insulates well
Cap design

The cap can be rotated to reveal the opening which allows the user to drink
